Globally, April 2020 was on a par with the previous warmest April on record (April 2016), with temperatures particularly above average over northern and central Eurasia, parts of Greenland and Antarctica, but markedly below average over large parts of North America. In Europe, temperatures were well above average in a number of western countries, but below average in the northeast.
Temperatures for April 2020 were well above average in several western European countries. MeteoSwiss reported an average April temperature for Switzerland that was 3ºC warmer than the 1991-2020 average and almost 5ºC warmer than the average for 1871-1900. Only April 2007 was substantially warmer. Météo-France reported the country’s third warmest April in a record extending back to 1900.
Temperatures elsewhere over Europe were less extreme. Colder than average conditions over the east of the continent were in marked contrast to the much above average temperatures experienced there in the late-autumn and winter months of 2019/20.
