The research group of Prof. H. Tanaka (Shinshu University, RISM), Dr. S. Hiraide, Y. Sakanaka, Prof. M. T. Miyahara (Kyoto University), Dr. H. Kajiro (Nippon Steel Co.), Dr. S. Kawaguchi (JASRI) proposed a high-efficiency CO2 separation system using gate-type adsorbents.
CO2 is a greenhouse gas that causes global warming, and the Paris Agreement (2015) set the goal of an average temperature rise of 2 ˚C or less to be achieved by reducing CO2 emissions. To achieve this goal, it is essential to separate and capture CO2 at emission sources with high efficiency and low cost, in addition to improving energy efficiency and utilizing renewable energy.
Therefore, the research group has focused on a gate-type adsorbent that captures CO2 by deforming its structure and has elucidated its excellent CO2 separation performance. In addition, they proposed a high-throughput adsorption-based separation system that takes advantage of the characteristics of the gate-type adsorbent, which can suppress the heat generated upon CO2 adsorption via its endothermic structural deformation, and found that the CO2 separation efficiency is much higher than that obtained using conventional methods.
